Huangyao Ancient Town
Huangyao Village can be traced back to near one thousand years ago. It was first built in Song Dynasty, constructed again in Wanli Period of Ming Dynasty, and boomed during Qianlong Period of Qing Dynasty. Owing to the fact that most people here were surnamed Huang and Yao, thus it was called Huangyao.
Huangyao lies at the lower reaches of Lijiang River. It has been long called “poetic land”. It abounds in six aspects. There are lots of limestone caves, pavilions, temples and shrines, ancestral temples, ancient trees, couplets and steles. Mountains go with water, water goes with bridge, bridge goes without pavilion, pavilion goes without couplet, and couple can not go without stele, which form a unique scene of the old village. All streets are inlaid with black stone slates. Architectures in the village are built in an array of Nine-Palaces and Eight-Diagrams, most of which are two-storied tile structure. The building craftwork is exquisite and superb.
There are altogether more than 600 families in the village, distributing themselves in eight streets. Most of their houses retain a Ming and Qing Dynasty style. The geographic location of Huangyao village is very special. Mountains surround the village on four sides, making the place easy to defend and difficult to invade. And transportation here is very inconvenient. As a result, the village remains a state of being half-isolated. That why a lot of old houses and antiques can be perfectly reserved
Physiognomy of Huangyao is characterized as karst topography. Sheer peeks erect high and deep limestone caves stretch far into underground. Streams flow though and old trees spear into the sky. Scenic spots here include eight major spots and twenty four minor spots. More than twenty temples and shrines have been reserved until today. Besides, there are more than ten pavilions, most of which were built in Ming or Qing Dynasty. Among them Culture Pavilion, Precious Bead Pavilion, Xingyu Pavilion, Lion Pavilion, Old Drama Stage, Wu’s Ancestral Temple, Go’s Ancestral Temple, Zuolong Temple, Jianlong Temple, Dailong Bridge, Hulong Bridge, and Natural Pavilion are quite well-known
