Three Gorges Dam

Three Gorges Dam Planning for this massive construction began decades before any actual building started. When the project actually got underway in 1992, it was the beginning of not only an enormous dam but, also, a hydroelectric power plant and locks to allow travel along the Yangtze.

As with any major change to a landscape, Three Gorges was faced with protest, controversy and setbacks along the way. As a public work, a source of tourism and in order to prevent future flooding of the region, the Three Gorges Dam surmounted these difficulties and was opened for travel in 1997.

Visitors to Three Gorges can observe the efforts underway for water conservation as well as get a chance to view the surrounding landscape from a terrific height. If you climb the Viewing Platform, you can see the entire dam close up. Take time to stop at the Memorial Garden, too. This museum holds machines used to build the damn and exhibits related to its construction. You will also find the ancient Huangling Temple here, the largest in the area.

Besides visiting the Three Gorges Dam by a Cruise Ship, you can also take public transportation from Yichang city. Transfers will be required to reach the dam although signage is plentiful and the tour bus is easily available. The tour bus runs every 20 minutes and admission to Three Gorges requires an entrance fee of CNY 105.
