Ultimate Travel Guide to Guilin and Beyond
Guilin is far more than the ink-wash painting printed on the back of the 20‑yuan note. It is a living landscape where limestone peaks rise from the Li River, and where Zhuang, Yao, Miao, and Dong ethnic groups have cultivated their traditions for centuries.
For first‑time visitors to China, as well as overseas Chinese tracing their roots, Guilin offers an experience that goes well beyond the cliché “scenery under heaven.” As a destination management company rooted in Guilin, we use our local eyes to unlock the Guilin you won’t find on postcards.
Framing Guilin – More Than a Postcard Landscape
Guilin’s karst scenery has been listed among National Geographic’s “Top 10 Most Beautiful Karst Landscapes” in the world. Along the Li River, peaks rise abruptly from emerald waters, creating the classic East Asian aesthetic of “mountains and waters mirroring each other.” You may have seen the iconic image: an old cormorant fisherman in a straw cape, a solitary oil lamp on a bamboo raft in the reflection of Yellow Cloth Shoal – the exact scene on the old 20‑yuan note.
But the real Guilin is far from a single postcard shot. From elevated viewpoints near Xingping Ancient Town, you can capture the perfect curve of “Sickle Bay.” From Xianggong Mountain, the Li River loops into a dramatic “Ω” shape. Our guides will take you away from the tourist bus crowds and help you find your own private composition, under the best morning or evening light.
Best Time to Visit – Four Seasons, Four Different Guilin
Guilin has no real low season – only different faces.
- April – June (Misty Li River / Terraces Filled with Water)
Photographers’ favorite. Light rain drapes the peaks in a silk veil, the river turns a hazy cyan, and you feel like walking into a Song‑ or Yuan‑dynasty landscape painting. Meanwhile, the Longji Terraces are freshly irrigated, turning thousands of steps into mirrors reflecting the sky – ideal for serious travelers seeking ethereal beauty.
- July – August (Lush Summer / Family Rafting)
Warm but not scorching. Abundant rainfall brings the Li and Yulong Rivers to their best water levels for rafting. Families love the gentle splash of the “dams” on the Yulong River. Lotus flowers bloom in the countryside, and rice paddies around Yangshuo turn into rolling green waves.
- September – October (Golden Longji / Pleasant & Cool)
Temperatures drop to the low 20s°C (70s°F) with lower humidity – perfect for hiking. Longji Terraces change from green to brilliant gold. Layer upon layer of ripe rice, with smoke rising from stilt houses, makes this a prime season for photographers and overseas Chinese seeking an “autumn homecoming.”
- November – March (Mild Winter / Ginkgo & Hot Springs)
Snow is rare. In Haiyang Village, a million ginkgo trees turn into a golden ocean. Rock climbing and cycling in Yangshuo are still enjoyable, while the Longsheng Hot Springs offer a warm escape among the mountains.

Must‑See Spots from Classic to In‑Depth in Guilin
1、City Icon | Elephant Trunk Hill & Two Rivers and Four Lakes
Elephant Trunk Hill is Guilin’s emblem – a hill that looks like an elephant drinking from the confluence of the Peach Blossom River and Li River. At night, a boat cruise on the Two Rivers and Four Lakes passes under more than a dozen bridges, with the Sun and Moon Pagodas reflected in the illuminated water – a cityscape that Western guests consistently love.
2、National Showpiece | Li River Classic Section (Yangdi – Xingping) & Xingping Ancient Town
Board at Yangdi Wharf. Along the way you’ll see Nine Horses Mural Hill, Yellow Cloth Shoal, and Wave‑like Rock scenery. This section is known as “the hundred‑li Gallery of the Li River.” At the end, Xingping Ancient Town has over 1,700 years of history, with cobblestone lanes and Ming/Qing dynasty houses. For hikers, climb Laozhai Mountain or Damian Mountain for the classic “Sickle Bay” panorama.
3、Soul of Yangshuo | Yulong River Bamboo Raft + Ten‑Mile Gallery Cycling
The Yulong River, a tributary of the Li, keeps the tradition of manual poling – no motor noise, only the sound of bamboo poles entering the water. We recommend the Jinlong Bridge to Old County section, which includes a few small “dam drops” – exciting but not scary. After getting off the raft, rent an e‑bike and ride along the Ten‑Mile Gallery, passing Moon Hill, the Big Banyan Tree (where Liu Sanjie, the “Third Sister of the Zhuang,” pledged love), and Butterfly Spring, then return to Yangshuo town along an ancient Tang‑Dynasty road.
4、World Heritage | Longji Rice Terraces
About 2.5 hours by car from downtown Guilin, in Longsheng County. The most spectacular are the Jinkeng Dazhai Terraces, cultivated for generations by the Red Yao people. Take the cable car up to Golden Buddha Summit, then walk down through the fields and into Huangluo Yao Village – known as “the world’s number one long‑hair village.” Red Yao women cut their hair only once in a lifetime. Drink a bowl of oil tea (youcha) and listen to them tell the story of their hair culture in folk songs. Ping’an Zhuang Village’s “Nine Dragons and Five Tigers” viewing platform is perfect for sunrise or cloud shots.
5、Cultural Immersion | Ethnic Villages & Intangible Heritage
We can arrange for you a morning tai chi class, a Chinese calligraphy workshop, a Guilin rice noodle cooking session, or the chance to learn a few lines of Zhuang mountain songs. These interactive activities are especially popular with overseas Chinese families and youth study tours.
6、Underground Palaces | Reed Flute Cave & Silver Cave
Reed Flute Cave is called the “Art Palace of Nature” – its stalactites glitter like a crystal palace and have been visited by dozens of foreign heads of state. Silver Cave is famous for its three wonders: “Musical Stone Screen,” “Fairy Pool Wonderland,” and “Snow Waterfall.” Both caves have bilingual audio guides.
7、Evening Performances | Impression Liu Sanjie & Guiling Legend
Impression Liu Sanjie, directed by Zhang Yimou, is the world’s first large‑scale outdoor landscape show. With 12 real karst peaks as the backdrop and more than 600 local fishermen as performers, it has become the spiritual nighttime landmark of Yangshuo. If you prefer an indoor high‑tech show, Guiling Legend tells the history of Guilin through spectacular sound and lighting – equally loved by Western families.
8、New Landmark | Ruyi Peak & The Real-Life "Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains"
Since 2024, Ruyi Peak has rapidly gained popularity among inbound visitors. Take the high‑altitude cable car that soars above the karst peaks, with a deep valley beneath you. The glass skywalk and suspension bridge at the top offer thrilling views. By the May Day holiday in 2026, it had become the most visited scenic area in Yangshuo.
Another must‑see new landmark is the "Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains" viewing platform in Putao Town, Puta Township (located in Shizhaidi / Yangmeiling Village). This is a stunning natural viewpoint that perfectly mirrors the famous Northern Song Dynasty painting A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains by Wang Ximeng. From the summit, layer upon layer of karst peaks rise like bamboo shoots, stretching to the horizon – green‑blue ridges dotted with rural villages and winding mountain paths. When mist and clouds drift through, the scene unfolds like a living ink‑wash painting. At sunset, the peaks shift from turquoise to warm orange‑red, creating a National Geographic‑grade spectacle.
9、Suburban Gems | Lingqu Canal & Gongcheng Confucian Temple
The Lingqu Canal is one of the world’s oldest and best‑preserved ancient water conservancy projects (comparable to Dujiangyan). It was dug in 214 BC to connect the Xiang River and the Li River. For overseas Chinese visitors, it is a key to understanding the cultural fusion between central China and Lingnan. Gongcheng Confucian Temple is the best‑preserved Confucian temple in Guangxi and an ideal venue for youth study tours and ancestral ceremonies.
